Being part of the healthcare industry is truly an honor. Not only is it a noble profession that offers high income, but it also allows you to help the community. Doctors, nurses, and other health professionals support the communities by ensuring quality healthcare. No wonder many students are dreaming of landing a career in this industry. However, before you become a professional doctor or nurse, you need to take the necessary steps. Among them is getting an ECFMG certificate, especially if you want to engage in U.S. healthcare programs.
What is An ECFMG Certificate?
Perhaps some of you lack knowledge about what an ECFMG certificate is. Not only that, but others might also lack understanding about its significance. ECFMG stands for Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. Since 1956, this organization has been assessing a certification program that determines if International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are ready for fellowship programs in the United States. Therefore, if you are a medical student dreaming of taking a residence and working in the country’s health organizations, you need an ECFMG certification.
Know that it is the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) that requires IMGs to get an ECFMG certification. Besides, it is also essential when completing the eligibility requirements for IMGs to take step 3 of USMLE. It stands for the United States Medical Licensing Examination. Passing the examinations and meeting the needs is vital for you to get an unrestricted license when practicing medicine.
Throughout the years, the requirements to get ECFMG certificates have been changed to meet the IMGs and other medical graduates’ demands. Aside from that, they also want to:
- achieve a common examination pathway to medical licensure for IMGs and U.S. medical graduates
- enhance the certification program
- comply with the changing immigration landscape
- respond to the needs of the U.S. graduate medical education community
- take advantage of new technologies
How to Get An ECFMG Certification
If you are an international medical graduate seeking career opportunities in the United States, you need an ECFMG certificate. Acquiring it allows you to get a license and practice your profession. Know that there are requirements that you need to complete before you can get this vital document. Among them are as follow:
Medical School Requirements
ECFMG establishes medical school requirements and the physician’s university must meet them. Academic institutions that could meet all needs will be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. They have to comply with their students’ and graduates’ eligibility requirements to apply to ECFMG for ECFMG Certification and examination.
You can confirm if your medical school meets ECFMG’s requirements by accessing the World Directory at www.wdoms.org. Medical schools that meet ECFMG’s requirements will have an ECFMG. Besides, ECFMG will note the graduation years for which the school meets these requirements.
Since ECFMG is a sponsor of the World Directory, the ECFMG note is located on the “Sponsor Notes” tab of the medical school listing. Unfortunately, if there is no ECFMG note on the Sponsor Notes tab of your medical school’s listing, you cannot apply to ECFMG for ECFMG Certification and examination.
Application for ECFMG Certification
You have to submit an Application for ECFMG Certification. The Application for ECFMG Certification consists of an on-line application and the Certification of Identification Form (Form 186) available through ECFMG’s Interactive Web Applications (IWA). It requires applicants to confirm their identity, contact information, and graduation from or enrollment in a medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (World Directory).
